Puerto Rico or Jandía? Two destinations, one perfect summer for children

Both Puerto Rico (Gran Canaria) and Morro Jable (Fuerteventura) share what families value most: beaches with calm waters, average temperatures above 20°C even in winter, accessible promenades, and a range of entertainment options designed for all ages.

  • Puerto Rico (Gran Canaria) is a more lively and compact area, with beaches close to each other, theme parks like the Angry Birds Activity Park, with zip lines, play areas, and various activities, or the Amadores Fun Park, a children’s and youth water park in Playa de Amadores just a few minutes away with many dining options.
  • Morro Jable (Fuerteventura) is quieter, ideal for families looking to be in contact with nature and near extensive beaches like Playa de Jandía, which stretches for about 30 kilometers in the south of the island.

No need to choose: in both destinations, you can enjoy a family vacation with all the comforts you need, with the pleasant climate that characterizes the Canary Islands, excellent maritime and air connections, with, for instance, Puerto Rico about 35 minutes by car from Gran Canaria Airport and Morro Jable, approximately an hour away from Fuerteventura Airport.

  • Catamaran excursion to see dolphins: several companies depart directly from Puerto Rico with day trips designed for families, with stops for swimming or snorkeling among other activities.

What to do with children in Morro Jable, Fuerteventura

The best beaches for children in Morro Jable and surroundings

  • Matorral Beach (Morro Jable): over 4 km of white sand and calm waters, with a blue flag, free parking, lifeguards, and sunbed rental. It is the reference beach to go with children in the area.
  • Butihondo Beach: turquoise waters and golden sand. Near Morro Jable, ideal for enjoying the sun and long walks.
  • Cofete Beach: a spectacular landscape north of the Jandía peninsula, but with strong currents and no surveillance, so it is recommended only for walking or taking photos with children, not for swimming. Access is by dirt road, better on an organized 4×4 tour.

Family plans in Morro Jable and surroundings

  • Catamaran or pirate ship excursion to see dolphins and whales: departs directly from the port of Morro Jable, with stops for swimming and, in some cases, lunch included.
  • Oasis Wildlife (La Lajita): about 25 minutes by car, it is the largest zoo and botanical garden in the Canaries, with interaction with lemurs and giraffes.
  • Jandía promenade: a safe bike and pedestrian lane that connects the beaches with the old town of Morro Jable, perfect for strolling with a stroller or bike at sunset.

Servatur Alameda de Jandía is only 500 meters from Jandía Beach, in the heart of Morro Jable, with easy access and close to most of these plans.

Practical tips for traveling with children to the Canary Islands

  • Best time: the climate is mild all year round, but summer (June-September) is when most families travel due to school holidays.
  • Sun protection: the Canary sun is intense even with clouds; use high protection sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours, especially between 12:00 and 16:00.
  • Book excursions in advance: in high season, activities like dolphin-watching catamaran tours or the Angry Birds Park can fill up several days in advance.
  • Mobility: both Puerto Rico and Morro Jable have accessible promenades; for excursions inland or to Cofete, an SUV rental car makes transportation much easier.
  • Hydration: always carry extra water at the beach and on excursions.
